In mid-April, the City of Kalamazoo received a notice from the State of Michigan stating that a drinking water treatment technique was violated in 2018. As our customer, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing about this.

The violation is in regards to treatment for corrosion control with phosphate. Phosphate levels were at times outside of the permitted range established by the State of Michigan. At no time were phosphate levels above the maximum dosage (the EGLE treatment parameters for phosphate are not the maximum safe dosage of the products used). The phosphates used are certified food grade products designed for consumption.

This does not create any immediate health or safety concern for water customers, but you have a right to know that it occurred. No action is necessary by water customers. A letter has been mailed to all customers informing them of this violation.

Steps are being taken to improve the water systems to prevent any future violations. Much more information about this Treatment Technique violation can be found in the documents below, which include the official notice provided to the City of Kalamazoo by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), the letter mailed to each of Kalamazoo's water customers, and a Q & A document.
