The City of Kalamazoo maintains and operates 83 miles of major streets, 166 miles of local streets, 20 bridges, over 15,517 signs, 80 traffic signals, and 4 flashing beacons at intersections. City staff evaluate road pavement conditions based on the PASER system, the statewide standard of pavement condition reporting selected by the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council. These ratings are considered when planning road construction projects among other factors. Road construction projects are also coordinated with other infrastructure projects as often as possible to minimize the impact on surrounding property owners and take advantage of cost savings.
Maintenance on state trunklines and highways in the Kalamazoo area is the responsibility of the Michigan Department of Transportation. Roads outside of the City limits are maintained by the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County.
