Social Justice Youth Award Nominations Accepted through January 7, 2020

The City of Kalamazoo is currently accepting nominations for the 2021 Social Justice Youth Awards. The awards recognize Kalamazoo-area students that have demonstrated achievements in racial justice, community service, volunteerism, and leadership.

Selected local students will be recognized by the Social Justice Youth Awards program. The City of Kalamazoo sponsors the Dr. Lewis Walker Award, which honors Dr. Walkers legacy as a trailblazer for the progression of racial equity in Kalamazoo. Six additional awards will be presented by the program sponsors: Consumers Energy, Schupan and Sons, Fifth Third Bank, Life EMS, Lodge-Dennis, and Kalamazoo Nonviolent Opponents of War. The award recipients will receive a monetary scholarship and a certificate of recognition

The awards will be presented at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, January 19, the day after the Martin Luther King, Jr Community-Wide Day of Service.

Nominations are accepted from adults who work with young people in any capacity, such as teachers, mentors, or coaches. Kalamazoo-area students between the ages of 12-19 are eligible for the award. Nominations are due by Monday, November 30, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
