With the November 5 election approaching, City residents are reminded that it is against City Ordinance to place signs of any kind, including campaign signs, in the City right-of-way without permission.
- 3-1 of the City Code of Ordinances states, “Unless expressly permitted by the City Commission, it shall be unlawful for any person to place, fasten or put, or cause to be placed, fastened or put any advertisement, poster, sign, handbill or placard of any kind upon anything belonging to the City or upon anything which exists on or in City property, including alleys, streets, parks or rights-of-way…” Any signs placed in violation of city ordinances may be removed without notice and disposed of appropriately.
On streets with sidewalks, the right-of-way generally extends from the center of the street to the house side of the sidewalk. On streets with no public sidewalk, the right-of-way typically extends 33 feet from the center of the road. - 7-3 of the Zoning Ordinance establishes standards for campaign signs in residential and commercial districts:
Residential zone districts: Campaign signs not exceeding 4 1/2 square feet in area that are not placed in and do not project into the public right-of-way are allowed without a sign permit.
Commercial zone districts: Campaign signs not exceeding six square feet in area that are not be placed in and do not project into the public right-of-way are allowed without a sign permit.
All campaign signs must be removed within 30 days following the election for which they are used.
