Shuttle Available to Help Access Businesses In Park St Market Area

Published on July 09, 2024

A shuttle service will start this week to help residents access businesses impacted by major construction projects happening near the planned event center and on Ransom St.

The shuttle will run between Mt. Zion Baptist Church (120 Roberson St.), Galilee Baptist Church (1216 N Westnedge Ave.), First United Baptist (821 S. Burdick St.), and Park Street Market (512 N Park St.) on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays starting Thursday, July 11. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the shuttle departs at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. It will start at Mt. Zion and pick up passengers from Galilee Baptist (11:10 a.m. or 7:10 p.m.) and First United Baptist (11:20 a.m. or 7:20 p.m.).

On Saturdays, it will depart from Mt. Zion at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. arriving at Galilee Baptist (10:10 a.m. or 2:10 p.m.) and First United Baptist (10:20 a.m. or 2:20 p.m.)

The shuttle will return from Park Street Market one hour after it arrives, bringing passengers back to all three locations. There is no cost to this service.

The shuttle service will continue through Thursday, August 8, or until work is completed on Park St. and it can be reopened to traffic.

This service was established to help residents and customers navigate to businesses in this area, which are impacted by both the Ransom St. coordinated utility project and ongoing work by Consumers Energy and the Event Center to relocate and upgrade utilities nearby, affecting Kalamazoo Ave. and Park St., among other streets.

“We recognize that this area is especially hard hit during this construction season that is bringing major investments to every one of Kalamazoo’s utilities and street reconstruction all over the city,” explained Public Services Director James Baker. “This area and these businesses are at the center of two major projects, so we are hoping that the shuttle service will help lessen some of the impact on them and their customers while these critical investments are completed.”

Local access is maintained in all construction areas in the city, and all businesses remain open and accessible. The City of Kalamazoo encourages residents to continue supporting the local businesses that our community depends on, even if it takes a few additional minutes or a short detour to get there. Park Street Market and the surrounding businesses can still be accessed by car via Kalamazoo Ave to Church St to Willard St.

The shuttle service is a partnership between the City of Kalamazoo, the Northside Ministerial Alliance, and Metro.
