The Historic District Commission conducts design review hearings in a quasi-judicial capacity to decide issues relating to the enforcement of the Historic District ordinance and to permit, within standards established by the ordinance, exceptions to strict compliance with the terms of the ordinance in recognized historic districts and as applied to designated landmarks.
The Historic District Commission meets regularly on the third Tuesday of the Month at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
Board Member Residency Requirements: Commissioners must be city residents and at least one member must be a graduate of an accredited school of architecture, have two years of architectural experience, or be a duly registered architect in Michigan. A majority of members must have a clearly demonstrated interested in historic preservation. Terms are three years long, limited to two consecutively with a three-year break.
