- Project schedule2024-2027
In 2023 the City of Kalamazoo was awarded a $750,000 Safe Streets for All Grant (SS4A) from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant will be used to finalize some current planning work, pilot several traffic calming measures, and develop a comprehensive plan to reduce roadway deaths and serious injuries. $260,000 of matching funds have been committed to this project from the Foundation for Excellence and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Safety Action Plan
The SS4A grant program helps local communities develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to guide transportation safety improvements. The Action Plan will focus on proactive tools and adopt the Safe System Approach. It will help unlock federal funding in the future to make successful safety improvements permanent.
Pilot project locations are helping provide before and after data to support the Action Plan work. The Plan will focus on topics like lighting, intersection safety and improvements, traffic calming, and bus stop improvements.
