In comparing the combined average rate of monthly water and wastewater bills among cities and townships in Michigan from 2003, Kalamazoo residents pay the sixth lowest in the State. Currently, citizens pay approximately $29.46 for both water and wastewater. The City of Kalamazoo’s Water Reclamation Plant (KWRP) has a state of the art, award winning facility designed to treat a complex mixture of domestic and industrial wastewater to strict state and federal discharge standards. In 2005, KWRP received the Platinum Peak Performance Award from the Environmental Protection Agency for five consecutive years of complete and consistent national pollutant discharge elimination system permit compliance. The City of Kalamazoo is the largest groundwater supply water treatment facility in Michigan, which accommodates and pumps 54 MDG (millions per gallon). Kalamazoo rates 143 MGD, an excess of 62% of the rated capacity by the United States Geological Service. Kalamazoo has a total of 9 water and 15 wastewater franchise service agreements with surrounding municipalities as well as an industrial wastewater treatment service contract with the Pfizer Corporation. |
